Federica Brignone of Italy secured her victory in the second super-G at the Alpine Skiing World Cup in St Moritz as world champion Lara Gut-Behrami crashed out after suffering a heavy fall.

Olympic giant slalom bronze medallist Brignone led an Italian one-two, completing the course - shortened due to high winds - in 57.81sec to edge out compatriot Elena Curtoni.

Curtoni was 0.11 down in second place, while American Mikaela Shiffrin, the early leader in the race for the women's overall title, was third in 58.24.

Gut-Behrami, winner of yesterday's super-G at the Swiss venue, appeared on course for a second-straight victory before crashing out.

The Swiss star skidded through two safety nets but was able to walk away after a lengthy spell of on-piste treatment.

Victory for Brignone saw the 31-year-old claim her 17th World Cup win and fifth in the super-G discipline.

She was one of five Italian skiers to finish in the top nine of the competition.

Sofia Goggia, second in yesterday's event, was sixth, 0.75 off Brignone's pace.

Shiffrin's second consecutive third-place result extended her lead at the top of the overall standings.

The two-time Olympic and six-time world champion has 525 points, with Goggia second on 435.

The women's Alpine Skiing World Cup season continues in Val d’Isère, due to stage the next event of the campaign from December 16 to 19.

A downhill and super-G are on the schedule for the World Cup in the French resort.
