Olympic downhill champion Sofia Goggia of Italy will be out to continue her storming start to the Alpine Skiing World Cup season in St Moritz this weekend.

Goggia arrives at the event having won three straight races in Lake Louise in Canada last weekend.

The double world medallist claimed back-to-back downhill victories before reigning supreme in the super-G.

Goggia will be among the favourites to top the podium again at the World Cup at the Swiss venue, due to feature two consecutive super-G competitions.

The Italian is third on the overall leaderboard, having amassed 315 points so far this season.

American double Olympic and six-time world champion Mikaela Shiffrin occupies top spot on 405 points, with Slovakia's Petra Vlhová second on 340.

St Moritz has hosted two Winter Olympic Games, but the World Cup had been thrown into doubt after Switzerland announced those travelling to the country from 12 countries - including Canada, where the last event on the circuit was held - would have to quarantine for 10 days as part of its stricter COVID-19 measures.

Skiers were later granted an exemption to compete, meaning the World Cup can go ahead.

It is due to run from tomorrow until Sunday (December 12).

A men's World Cup, including giant slalom and slalom events, in Val d’Isère in France is also scheduled to take place this weekend.

Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt will head to the French resort as the overall World Cup leader on 346 points.
