The phrase is a play on the famous Cold War speech by United States President John F. Kennedy in Berlin in 1963, when he declared "Ich bin ein Berliner".

Prince Harry founded the Invictus Games in 2014, with the multi-sport event open for wounded military personnel.

He addressed the more than 500 athletes from 21 countries in attendance during his Opening Ceremony speech at the Merkur Spiel-Arena.

"These Games are not solely about medals, PBs or finishing lines," Prince Harry said.

"They are about overcoming any and all perceptions that have held you back, especially those you’ve placed on yourselves, because all of this, all of us, are here because of you.

"This isn’t a gift.

"This isn’t a handout.

"This is yours.

"Take it."

He singled out Ukrainian athlete Yuliia "Taira" Paievska, saying: "I don’t think I have ever met someone as courageous and resilient".

Prince Harry also welcomed Colombia, Israel and Nigeria on their first appearances at the Invictus Games, before urging athletes to "grasp every opportunity and revel in it".

"You may well be the person someone is looking to for inspiration, because you haven’t let fear control you," he added.

"Whether competitor or spectator, you will all take so much away from these Games.

"There are endless opportunities to have your lives touched and hearts opened."

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius attended the Opening Ceremony, while Chancellor Olaf Scholz shared a video message recorded before he injured his face while jogging which required him to wear an eye patch at this week's G20 Summit in India's capital New Delhi.

The Opening Ceremony also featured the traditional parade of nations, a performance by AXIS Dance Company and the raising of the Invictus Games flag.

American rapper Macklemore played out the Opening Ceremony.

Competition at the Invictus Games is due to start tomorrow and run until next Saturday (September 16), with 10 sports on the programme including table tennis for the first time.
