Thailand secured a hard-fought win over China to lift the 22nd Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship trophy in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Playing on home turf, the final was a five-set thriller that finished 25-21, 25-27, 25-19, 20-25, 16-14 in favour of the hosts.

The win was their third in the history of the tournament after clinching gold in 2009 in Hanoi and in 2013 at home.

Chatchu-On Moksri starred for Thailand in the final with 23 points from 21 attacks, one block, and one ace.

The players consisting mostly of the squad that won the International University Sports Federation World University Games title in Chengdu this year, was trailing in the deciding set.

However, they made it 14-14 before adding two more to seal the deal.

Earlier, two-time defending champions Japan had won the bronze medal in another tight match against Vietnam.

The third-place match belonged to Okumu Oba Fuyumi Hawi, who top scored with 27 points to help Japan win the game 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11.

Vietnam can be proud of their performance so far, having finished in the top four for the first time since making their debut in the event in 1991.

Kazakhstan rounded off the top five teams as they defeated South Korea 26-24, 25-23, 25-23.

The Kazakhs had captain Sana Anarkulova to thank for their win, scoring a match-high 20 points from 17 attacks, two blocks and one ace.

China is the most successful team in the competition with 13 titles, followed by Japan in second with five gold medals.

Victory this year for Thailand puts them third in the overall medals table.
