India beat South Africa in the final of the women’s fours to win Commonwealth Games gold for the first time in lawn bowls here.

Skip Rupa Rani Tirkey, a worker with the state sport department in Jharkhand, led the squad which comprised police constable Lovely Choubey, sports teacher Pinki Singh and Nayanmoni Saikia, who comes from a farming background to victory.

They began their assault in the fourth end and continued to lead until the eighth end.

The South Africans pulled back and briefly led before India restored their advantage in the 13th end and eventually won 17-10.

Their victory even prompted congratulations from Indian cricket star Mithali Raj.

New Zealand beat Fiji 17-6 to win bronze.

In the men’s pairs, the Welsh pairing of painter and decorator Daniel Salmon and electrician Jarrad Breen led from the third end onwards.

England’s Jamie Walker and Sam Tolchard clawed their way back to level, but the Welsh restored their advantage in the 16th end and never lost it, eventually winning 19-18 in a nerve-jangling finale.

"I'd never even dreamt of that happening. I always wanted to get to a Commonwealth Games, but to win two golds now, it's just beyond my wildest dreams," Salmon said.
