Ellen Ryan staged a tremendous fightback to win women’s singles gold in lawn bowls at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and then emulated fellow Australian Pat Cash by climbing into the stands to greet friends and team mates after the victory.

She defeated Guernsey’s Lucy Beere 21-17 in the final, but the margin belies a pulsating and nerve shredding encounter.

After eight ends, Beere seemed on course for Guernsey’s first gold medal in 32 years when she held a 10-2 lead.

Gradually Ryan fought her way back into the contest with points in five consecutive ends, so that by the 14th she held a slender advantage.

The lead fluctuated after that until Ryan finally drew ahead in the 22nd end.

Then came the unorthodox celebration pioneered by Cash when he won the Wimbledon men's singles tennis crown in 1987.

Beere will still be the toast of Guernsey after the first medal won by the island in any sport since silver in shooting at the 1994 Games in Victoria British Columbia.

Her medal will also be celebrated in the Isle of Wight where she was born.

Malaysia’s Siti Zahani Ahmad won bronze after defeating Shae Wilson of the Norfolk Islands 21-10.

Earlier in the day, England won the men’s triples beating Australia 14-12.

The England trio of Jamie Chestney, Louis Ridout and Nick Brett had stormed into a 12-1 lead after the ninth end.

Australia's Barry Lester, Carl Healey and Ben Twist clawed their way back into the match and drew level in the 16th end, as they denied England a single chance to score.

The victory was assured when England moved ahead with a point in each of the final ends,

These were the first gold medals won by England’s male bowlers since a fours triumph at 2002.

Wales beat Fiji 21-7 to claim the bronze.
