World records fell in the men’s under-83 kilogram competition at the World Classic Powerlifting Championships continued in Calgary.

New Zealand’s Brett Gibbs set the standard in the squat discipline, achieving a world record lift of 299 kilograms at the Rally Pointe Center in the Canadian city.

His performance was followed by a similarly impressive one by Britain’s Owen Hubbard in the bench press event.

Hubbard produced a world record lift of 214.5kg.

Both lifters featured on the overall podium, Gibbs topping the standings with a total lift of 830.5kg across the competition.

He was followed by the United States’ Russel Orhil, the silver medallist on 783.5kg.

Hubbard took the bronze medal, the Briton lifting 770kg overall.

America's Taylor Atwood triumphed in the men’s under-74kg competition with a total of 758kg.

The podium was rounded off by Singapore’s Clinton Lee and Japan’s Yoshihiro Higa, who lifted 712.5kg and 701kg respectively.

Brazil’s Ana Castellain secured victory in the women’s under-72kg event following a series of good lifts.

She finished the competition with an overall total of 525kg.

Sweden’s Annika Zelander settled for the silver medal on 507.5kg and Rhaea Stinn of Canada claimed bronze with 497.5kg.

Classic - or unequipped - competition due to take place until Sunday (June 17).

The Championships is run by the International Powerlifting Federation.
