Britain’s Luke Richardson triumphed on the final day of junior competition at the World Classic Powerlifting Championships in Calgary.

Richardson topped the standings in the men’s junior 120 kilogram competition at the Rally Pointe Center in the Canadian city.

The British lifter achieved a total lift of 960kg across the disciplines to clinch the gold.

He finished clear of the United States’ Joseph Pena, who finished as the runner-up with a total of 920.5kg.

The podium was completed by Canada’s Ty William Scratch, after he managed 887.5kg.

Further British success came in the women’s junior 84kg event, with Danielle Ellington emerging as the winner.

She achieved a total lift of 428.5kg to claim the gold medal.

The United States’ Emily Diaz and Morgan Gilliam rounded off the medal positions.

They achieved a total of 410kg and 402.5kg respectively.

Canada’s Jessica Buettner delivered gold in front of a home crowd in the 72kg competition.

Buettner achieved a world junior record total of 504kg, aided by a deadlift record of 227.5kg.

Sweden’s Vilma Olsson and the United States’ Klole Doublin rounded off the podium, having managed totals of 472.5kg and 455kg respectively.

Classic - or unequipped - competition due to take place until June 17 at the Rally Pointe Center.

Men's and women's events are part of the programme as well as junior and masters - veterans - competitions.
