The postponed World Para Swimming and World Para Powerlifting Championships in Mexico City have been rescheduled for November 27 to December 7 following the devastating earthquake in the capital.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) made the decision after "extensive dialogue and assurances from the Local Organising Committee and City of Mexico, as well as consultation from the IPC membership".

The two Championships were due to be staged from September 30 to October 6 as part of a large Para Sport Festival.

But the IPC put the events on hold after last month's earthquake, which measured 7.1 on the Richter magnitude scale, killed more than 200 people in the Mexican capital.

It was the first time the IPC had ever postponed a major Championships.

Around 360 of the world's strongest Para-powerlifters from 65 countries were set to compete at the Juan de la Barrera Olympic Gymnasium.

More than 550 swimmers from 60 countries were expected at the Francisco Marquez Olympic Swimming Pool.

The IPC have given competing nations until Sunday (October 8) to register their teams for the events following the confirmation of the new dates.

IPC President Andrew Parsons, elected to succeed Sir Philip Craven last month, admitted the rearranged dates would not suit everybody but said the worldwide governing body felt the Para Sport Festival should go ahead to show support to the people of the city.

The decision to postpone the two World Championships represented the first major incident of Parsons' Presidency.

"We appreciate that the new dates may not suit all athletes and teams," said Parsons.

"However, we feel it is important to put on the 2017 Para Sport Festival in order to further show our support to the people of Mexico City and give all of those athletes that have spent the year training for this event the opportunity to compete at the very highest level.

"We can now look forward with great excitement to the world's best powerlifters and swimmers going head-to-head for world titles later this year."

Parsons also thanked the IPC membership and local organisers for their patience in dealing with what he described as an "unprecedented situation for the Paralympic Movement".

"I would also like to thank the whole Paralympic Movement for their support of the people of Mexico following the tragic earthquakes last month," he added.

"After extensive dialogue, it is clear that both the Local Organising Committee and City Mexico are eager and very passionate about rescheduling the 2017 Para Sport Festival.

"They want to show to the world that Mexico City is open and that life and business is continuing.

"At the same time, the feedback from the IPC membership is that they are keen for the Championships to go ahead.

"After carrying out all of the necessary safety checks on the venues, team hotels and all related infrastructure, we have decided to reschedule the Championships for two months later than originally planned."
