What is it? World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships Hamburg

When is it? July 13 to 16

Where is it? The course takes in the city of Hamburg in Germany, with the swim phase in the River Alster, the bike route going along the Elbe and taking in the sights of the city, and the run course finishing in front of the Hamburg City Hall

Who’s taking part? Many of the world’s top triathletes - the men’s elite race is due to feature Britain’s Alex Yee, who won individual gold at last year’s World Triathlon Sprint Championships in Montreal, and two medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Hayden Wilde of New Zealand, Australia’s Matthew Hauser, who won three medals at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and men’s individual Olympic champion at Tokyo 2020 Kristian Blummenfelt of Norway are all expected to feature.

The women’s elite race is expected to feature the leader of the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series Taylor Spivey of the United States, and her compatriot Summer Rappaport, second in the series standings.

Britain’s Beth Potter, who has won two rounds of the World Triathlon Championship Series so far this year, in Abu Dhabi and Montreal, is also set to feature.

Why is it important? It is the first edition of the Super Sprint World Championships, with the elite races part of the Paris 2024 Olympics qualification process.

The winning team in the Elite Mixed Relay World Championships are set to earn two male and two female berths for Paris 2024, which would roll down to the runners-up if Britain, who have already qualified, were to win in Hamburg.

What’s the history? Hamburg is the only city to have hosted a race as part of every edition of the World Triathlon Series, which was founded in 2009.

The traditional course has been reduced for this year’s Super Sprint World Championships, and is set to feature a 300 metre swim in the Binnenalster Lake, a three-lap bike through the city centre and a two-lap run that concludes in front of the City Hall.

What are they saying? "We are delighted to be able to stage the {Super Sprint} format’s first World Championships alongside the Mixed Relay World Championships for Elite and Junior/Under-23, the Junior World Championships and the Age Group Sprint and Mixed Relay World Championships in Hamburg, all of which will add huge entertainment to what was already one of the most popular stops on the Series," Marisol Casado, World Triathlon President
