June 16 - A search to find a new chief executive to lead UK Sport into the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics was launched today after the announcement last week that John Steele is leaving to join the Rugby Football Union.

According to the advertisement, published today on UK Sport's website, the successful candidate will earn a six-figure annual salary and will be "responsible for investing over £100 million ($148 million) per annum in Britain's best Olympic and Paralympic athletes".

The advertisement also highlights the need for applicants who "have operated at Board or senior management level within high performance sport and can evidence a track record of demonstrably enhancing an organisation through decisive leadership and strategic decision making underpinned by strong financial planning and accountability".

The successful applicant will also "guide the business in matters relating to the negotiation of  Funding Agreements and other regulatory requirements, and ensure that the necessary procedures and systems are in place to assess both lottery and exchequer funding applications and the corresponding compliance and grant conditions."

The successful candidate will "lead the organisation to ensure it is best prepared for delivery at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond", the advert said.

It added: "The remit of the role is to set and drive the strategy for high performance sport by investing in Olympic and Paralympic success, bidding and staging major sporting events on home soil and for promoting British sport’s interest & engagement internationally covering 2012 but well beyond."

Applications close are due to close on July 5.
