Weightlifting is one of India's most successful sports but has been hit by a number of doping scandals in recent years.

 

Juga is expected to help chart out a procedure of dealing with the problem.

 

Harbhajan Singh, the President of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF), said: "Juga worked with the Army Sports Institute last year, so he has an idea of the system here.

 

"We have not discussed at length about the menace of doping yet, but the mandate is pretty clear about the tough stance that we need to adopt to ensure there are no more embarrassments.

 

"Juga knows our problems only too well and we are scheduled to meet next week to decide on our plan of action.

 

"I am sure his presence in the Indian camp will help us prepare better for the Commonwealth Games, in which much is at stake for us, including our reputation."

 

The IWF has been under investigation in recent months, with the newly formed National Anti Doping Authority (NADA) looking to trap weightlifters who are suspected to be avoiding dope tests.

 

The NADA last week approached the national federation to take addresses of those who have vanished from training camps with the intention of making surprise dope checks in their homes.

 

India has had to suffer the ignominy of being twice banned from international competitions [in 2004 and 2006] due to doping by its competitors, including in the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games.
