Oscar_Pistorius_Crystal_Palace_August_2010July 19 - Double amputee Oscar Pistorius (pictured) has given up trying to qualify for the 400 meters at the World Championships in Berlin next month, he has admitted.

The South African, who has been attempting to make the qualifying mark for Berlin, also failed to reach last year's Beijing Olympics having won a long battle over the right to compete with able-bodied athletes.

The Paralympic gold medallist ran a season's best of 47.07sec in Lucerne last week - well short of the qualifying time of 45.95.

The South African suffered a boating accident in February which left him with head and facial injuries.

It hampered his training but he is still targeting London's 2012 Olympics.

He said: "Having not made the minimum qualifying time, I must resign myself to staying at home."

Pistorius will now probably aim for a place at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
