Ronaldo got to know Beckham (pictured top) when the pair played at Real Madrid together and said that, even at 37, the former England captain would still have a key role to play as one of the three over-age British players at London 2012.

"Beckham is a real calm guy and a team player, and, despite his status and fame, he is actually very humble," said Ronaldo, a three-times FIFA World Player of the Year.

"Never during my time at Real Madrid did I hear anyone complain about him and he would help with the younger players.

"I'm sure he would love to participate in this Olympic dream.

"It's upto the manager to pick the best team available, but if I was the manager I definitely would [pick him] as he would guarantee quality.

Ronaldo, who won an Olympic bronze medal in 1996, added:  "David really looks after himself so, despite his age, I really think he could contribute."
