Welsh athletics ace Jeremiah Azu is eyeing a British record after breaking the 10-second barrier at the True Athletes Classic in Leverkusen, Germany, on Saturday.

The 23-year-old sprinted to victory in a comfortable fashion with a time of 9.97 seconds. This achievement propelled him to the eighth position on the British all-time 100m list, sharing the spot with Dwain Chambers and Adam Gemili.

Azu secured a decisive victory, outpacing Germans Owen Ansah (10.11) and Robin Ganter (10.13). However, the second-fastest time across both finals was recorded by Yannick Wolf, who achieved a lifetime best of 10.08 to win the B final.

Additionally, he became the 12th British man to break the 10-second barrier in the 100m event. Zharnel Hughes holds the British record, having clocked 9.83 seconds in 2023, surpassing Linford Christie's previous record of 9.87 seconds, established in 1993.

“Honestly I believe by the end of my career I will be able to run the British record,” Azu told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast. “I am confident with the set-up I have got and the belief I have got, it’s all catered for me to run extremely fast.”

His victory ensures that he has now achieved the Olympic qualifying standard. “I have known (that time) was there for a long time,” Azu said. “I think once you start to focus on something so much it becomes harder to achieve it. This time I thought let me just enjoy my running today and it came without thinking about it. It’s pretty exciting.”

Since last summer, Azu has held the Welsh record, achieving a time of 10.08 to surpass Christian Malcolm's previous best mark of 10.11. Later, Azu improved upon this with a time of 10.04. In 2022, Azu clocked a wind-assisted time of 9.90 to claim victory at the UK Athletics Championship.

He is set to participate in the European Athletics Championships in Italy from 7 until 12 June before shifting his focus to the UK Athletics Championships at the end of the following month.

A top-three finish in the Manchester-held event would secure Azu a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games this summer.
