African Olympism meets in Algiers. ANOCA

The 9th Ordinary General Assembly of the Association of African National Olympic Academies (ANOCA) met in Algiers, with 25 out of 39 academies present, to evaluate the efforts made by the Association des Académies Nationales Olympiques d'Afrique (AANOA) and their respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs) in promoting and disseminating the Olympic ideals and values.

Members of 25 out of 39 African National Academies attended the conference, which was held in Algiers under the auspices of the ANOCA, in collaboration with the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee (COA), headed by President Abderrahmane Hammad and the President of ANOCA, Mustapha Berraf.  attended the meeting.

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), Robin Mitchel, and several personalities from the international, African and Algerian Olympic family. The meeting was addressed by the president of the AANOA, Ridha Layouni, who said: "The 9th AANOA meeting in Algiers is an opportunity to discuss the role of the organisation in promoting and disseminating the values and principles of Olympism on the African continent."

"AANOA is a non-governmental organisation active in the dissemination and defence of the values and principles of Olympism in Africa, under the supervision of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, ANOCA, led by Mustapha Berraf. Our aim is always to intensify our activities and contribute effectively to the African and international Olympic movement, especially in this Olympic year, which is a great opportunity for us," said Layouni.

The Algiers meeting was an opportunity for the various academies to present their annual activities and to voice their concerns and difficulties. It was also an opportunity to share experiences and present the future programmes of the African academies and the Association of Academies.

The participants reviewed and evaluated the recommendations of the 8th session, which was held in Hammamet, Tunisia, from 23 to 26 June 2023, in order to develop new proposals for the future.


The director of the Algerian Olympic Academy, Fouad Jabrouni, stated: "Our mission is to consolidate the Olympic values at primary, secondary and university levels and to promote sport in Algeria through a series of activities, including the celebration of World Olympic Day and the Olympic Week organised by the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee".

In his opening remarks, ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf commented: "The Association of African National Olympic Centres is of greater importance than the Association of Continental Centres, given the increasing number of participating national centres."

"The Associations of Academies are working effectively to convey the Olympic values to African youth so that they become familiar with the four Olympic pillars: respect for self and others, sport, education and the environment. Through this organisation, we seek to instil in African children and young people the principles of integrity, friendship and brotherhood among peoples," concluded Berraf.

The 9th session ended with a visit to the Algerian Olympic Museum and the headquarters of the Algerian Olympic Academy.
