Dominican Republic defeated Brazil in straight sets to win the women's volleyball gold at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago.

The Dominicans defended their title from Lima 2019 in front of a full capacity Parque O'Higgins Arena in Chile's capital, winning 26-24, 25-16, 25-19.

Brazil's regular requests for video reviews during the tight first set resulted in a negative reaction from the crowd but the second and third were much more comfortable for the Caribbean side.

"I'm super happy to be a two-time Pan American gold champion," said Dominican captain Niverka Marte.

"What better way to close out the year than by winning a gold medal.

"We've worked pretty hard and for all of our people.

"I've always said that when you work, the work always pays off in a big way and that's what has happened this year."

It was a quieter day of medal action in Santiago with only nine golds awarded.

Notably, the normally dominant United States failed to top a podium but remain at the summit of the standings with 59 golds.

In track cycling at the velodrome, Nicholas Lee of Trinidad and Tobago defended his sprint title as he out-paced training partner Jair Tjon En Fa of Suriname 2-0 in the final.

Fa's silver medal was the first Suriname has won in any sport since the Winnipeg Games in 1999.

Mexico's Yareli Acevedo Mendoza won the women's omnium gold.

In modern pentathlon there was more Mexican success at Las Condes Military School as sisters Maya and Catherine Oliver won the women's relay.

Maya had earlier led the siblings to gold and silver in the individual women's competition.

Racquetball titles at the Racket Sports Center went to both Bolivia and Mexico.

The Bolivians won the men's team title as Conrrado Moscoso and Carlos Keller, the respective gold and silver medallists in the singles, teamed up with Kadim Carrasco to defeat Canada.

Mexico took the women's team gold thanks to singles champion Paola Longoria, silver medallist Montserrat Mejia and Alexandra Herrera.

They defeated Argentina with Longoria now boasting 11 Pan American Games gold medals.

Three shooting titles were decided at Polígono de tiro de Pudahuel, including the women's 10 metres air pistol gold for Alejandra Zavala, adding to her 25m crown from earlier in the Games.

She totalled 234.1 points to top the standings.

Canadian Tugrul Ozer scored 240.5 points, a Pan American Games record, to win the men's 10m air pistol.

"It means a lot, really," Ozer said.

"There's a lot of effort behind this performance.

"It was a challenging competition."

In the women's trap, Adriana Ruano of Guatemala won gold for the independent athletes team.

She hit 38 targets to lead an independent one-two over compatriot Waleska Soto.

Guatemala is banned from competing under its own flag in Santiago as the country's National Olympic Committee is currently suspended.
