The Poles were clinical at the Palazzo dello Sport as they saw out a 3-0 win in 99 minutes in the capital.

The scoreline is not truly reflective of an impressive Italian performance as they came agonisingly close to each set before losing 25-20, 25-21, 25-23.

Wilfredo Leon Venero top scored for Poland with 13 points and had his total matched by Italy's Daniele Lavia.

The win marks 14 years since Poland's maiden title when they beat France 3-1.

Earlier in the day, Slovenia won a five-set epic against France to claim the bronze medal.

The Slovenians enjoyed a blistering start to the match before eventually running out as 25-22, 25-16, 25-21, 25-18, 15-11 winners.

They managed to fend off a potentially monumental comeback with their blocking prowess at the net.

Rok Možič scored a match-high 26 points including 23 kills, two aces, and one block.

He was followed by Slovenia's captain Tine Urnaut on 18 and France's top scorer Earvin Ngapeth on 16.

"For the first time we finish the tournament with a win," Urnaut said.

"It was a very tough match today.

"After two sets France started to play on their level, so all in all we are happy that we won.

"We played with [injury replacement] Dejan [Vinčić] for the last 20 years, so this is his place, his team, and he showed today that he is essential part of the team, he came and helped us to earn this medal."
