India have named their coaching set-up for the cricket competition at the Asian Games but there are doubts over whether Igor Štimac will lead the country’s men’s football team in Hangzhou.

VVS Laxman and Hrishikesh Kanitkar have been selected as the head coaches for India’s respective men’s and women’s teams at the Games.

Sairaj Bahutule and Munish Bali have been chosen in the men’s coaching team, responsible for bowling and fielding. respectively.

Rajib Dutta is set to be hold the role of bowling coach for the women’s side, with Subhadeep Ghosh due to conduct fielding coaching duties.

Laxman, who scored more than 8,700 runs in his international career, is head of cricket at India’s National Cricket Academy.

The 48-year-old has previously taken temporary charge of India in place of head coach Rahul Dravid.

With India preparing to compete at a home Cricket World Cup which is due to start on October 5, Laxman will lead a second-string team that is set to be captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Gaikwad was leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League in 2021 and has represented his country in two one day internationals and 11 T20 matches.

India’s senior women’s team remain without a full-time head coach following the departure of Ramesh Powar last December.

Kanitkar led the side before the appointment of interim head coach Nooshin Al Khadeer in July and has been tasked with taking charge of them at Hangzhou 2022.

India are one of four teams that have been entered straight into the quarter-finals of both the women’s and men’s competition at the Asian Games.

The women are set to make their first outing on September 21 before the men are due to play their last-eight encounter on October 3.

India have yet to capture an Asian Games gold since the sport made its debut at Guangzhou 2010.

Another sport that India will be aiming to taste success in is football but there are reports that they will be without Štimac and many of their top players for the men’s tournament.

India had named a squad that comprised of stars, including potent striker Sunil Chhetri and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

But they are expected to miss Hangzhou 2022 due to the Asian Games clashing with the Indian Super League (ISL).

Štimac, a former Croatian international who was part of their team that finished third at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, has been involved in a dispute with ISL clubs over the release players.

He is also reportedly unlikely to travel to the Chinese city for the event.

The men’s football competition is due to run from September 19 to October 7, with India drawn in Group A along with Bangladesh, Myanmar and hosts China.
