Canada Soccer will not field a women's team in this year’s Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, it has been announced.

The Games, which are due to run from October 20 to November 5, conflict with a FIFA international window.

Women's football was added to the Pan American Games programme in 1999 and the Canadian women competed in five consecutive editions - winning gold in 2011, silver in 2003, bronze in 2007 and finishing fourth in 1999 and 2015.

They did not take part in the 2019 edition in Lima as it clashed with FIFA Women's World Cup commitments.

"As an organisation we have opted not to participate due to associated challenges with availability of the squad and maximising contacts with full rosters," Canada Soccer said in a statement, as quoted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Canada coach Bev Priestman has said she hopes that games will be played in both of the upcoming FIFA international windows, which run from October 23 to November 1 and from November 27 to December 5.

Next up for the 10th-ranked Canadian women is a two-legged Olympic qualifier against 37th-ranked Jamaica, due to take place on September 22 in Kingston and four days later in Toronto.

Canada, the reigning Olympic champions, failed to reach the knock-out stages of last month's FIFA World Cup finals, finishing third in their group.

In July, Canada Soccer's interim general secretary Jason de Vos revealed that the organisation was considering filing for bankruptcy.

The 2023 Pan American Games also features an under-22 competition for men’s teams, but Canada did not qualify.
