The African boxing qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympics has reached the quarter-final stage in Dakar in Senegal.

A total of 18 Olympic quota spots are due to be awarded at the competition, which is taking place at the Dakar Arena.

The first quota spots are due to be allocated on Thursday (September 14) when the winners of the women’s semi-finals in the 54 kilograms, 60kg, 50kg, 57kg and 66kg are awarded places for their respective nations.

Single quota spots are then due to be allocated on Friday (September 15) to the winner of the women’s 75kg final, plus the men’s 57, 71, 92, +92, 51, 63.5 and 80kg finals.

In the men’s 63.5kg category Richarno Colin of Mauritius, the 2011 African Games champion, was among the round-of-32 winners overcoming Mikael Taha of the Ivory Coast on points 5-0.

Earlier in the round-of-64 Colin produced a good tactical display to beat home fighter Souleymane Diallo with a controlled 4-1 win.

In the men’s 80kg category there was an emotional win for Moroccan fighter Mohamed Assaghir.

The reigning African champion defeated Equatorial Guinea’s Maximiliano Bibang by unanimous decision, and dedicated the win to those who died in an earthquake which struck the country on Friday (September 8).

Algeria’s Roumaysa Boualam, the first female boxer to compete for her country at the Olympics when she featured at Tokyo 2020, was a convincing winner in the round-of-32 phase of the women’s 50kg, overcoming Gezahegngayiza Betelhem of Ethopia 5-0.

In the men’s 80kg round-of-32 home fans were able to enjoy the heavy punches of Senegal’s Mouhamed Konate, who registered a unanimous points victory 4-0 against Ghana’s Seth Gyimah, also known as Freezy MacBones.

In the men’s 92kg round-of-32 Sudan’s sole representative at the continental boxing qualifier Suliman Abelazim Abdalla competed despite his training being impacted by fighting in his homeland.

Abdalla was up against Mali’s Maxime Coulibaly, who ran out a comfortable 5-0 winner, although Abdalla received widespread support as he reached a continental boxing qualifier for the first time.

Coulibaly withdrew from his bout in the round-of-16, handing a walkover win to his opponent Bonginkosi Nhlapo of South Africa.

Following a rest day tomorrow, action is due to continue on Wednesday (September 13), with quarter-final action across all categories, while round-of-16 fights are also due to be contested in the women’s 50kg.
