Lorenzo Milesi of Italy leads the general classification at the 2023 Vuelta a España after crossing the line first in stage one.

It took 17min 30sec for the Team DSM-Firmenich rider to complete the 14.8 kilometre team time trial at the 78th edition of the Spanish Grand Tour.

Movistar were the runner-up after finishing less than a second behind while six seconds behind in third was EF Education-EasyPost.

Soudal-QuickStep finished fourth, with defending champion Remco Evenepoel also six seconds behind.

Groupama–FDJ completed the top five with the same timing.

Team DSM-Firmenich’s Max Poole came in second overall followed by Romain Bardet, Sean Flynn, Oscar Onley, and Chris Hamilton.

It has been a great month for Milesi, who was the U23 ITT world champion in Scotland a couple of weeks ago.

It was raining heavily and the roads were slipper, leading Maurice Ballerstedt of Alpecin-Deceuninck and Eddie Dunbar of Jayco-AlUla crashing.

Weather also spoiled the race for Ineos Grenadiers and UAE Team Emirates while Jonas Vingegaard, who was the co-leader for Jumbo-Visma, suffered a flat tyre.

The Vuelta a España is set to continue tomorrow with a 181.8km hilly stage from Mataró to Barcelona.
