Canada has claimed its first Men's Pan-American Volleyball Cup gold medal after defeating Brazil in Mexico.

Daniel Lewis' side won 3-1 in what is an unfair scoreline for their opponents on the surface as each set was closely fought at the Arena Astros in Guadalajara.

The Canadians prevailed 26-24, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22 to finally take victory after two silver medals in the previous two editions of the tournament.

"I'm so proud of this group; the focus, the effort and the hard work," said Lewis.

"This team trained for 11 weeks together, and I was very demanding of them and each step they kept working hard all summer.

"When we got to the event, they executed so well, they stuck together the whole tournament.

"It's a big stepping stone for all these players, many of them just starting their professional careers.

"We have to keep pushing to compete with the best and keep finding our way."

In the final, Canada was led by opposite hitter Isaac Heslinga with 13 points while Byron Keturakis and Logan House picked up nine points each.

The Canadians led in blocks by eight to three as well as in service points by four to one, while Brazil led in attacking points 59-52.

Canada also committed one less unforced error than Brazil with 31.

Darlan Ferreira of Brazil was the top scorer of the match with 24 points while Victor Almeida added 11 to his team's total.

"It's been a tough summer, we've worked hard, and we were focused on this tournament," said Canadian captain Fynn McCarthy.

"The gold medal is thanks to the great work we've been doing all summer."

Heslinga was named as the tournament's most valuable player while Brazil also received individual awards, with Ferreira chosen as best opposite and Matheus Silva selected as best setter.

Host nation Mexico, who lost the bronze medal-match 3-0 to Chile, had Axel Téllez named as second best blocker and Hiram Bravo earned the award for best libero.

Cuban Alain Gorguet received the award for best receiver while Wilfrido Hernández from the Dominican Republic was the best attacker, Peruvian Daniel Urueña was recognised as best blocker and Chilean Vicente Parraguirre was the tournament's best scorer.
