Chinese dairy company Mengniu has extended its sponsorship of FIFA until 2030 following the success of the partnership at the Women’s World Cup currently taking place in Australia and New Zealand.

Mengniu signed up with football’s world governing body shortly before the FIFA World Cup in Russia in 2018.

They were also a sponsor of last year’s World Cup in Qatar and extended it to include the women’s tournament.

They signed up as a sponsor of this year's FIFA Women's World Cup last month shortly before the tournament kicked-off.

The new deal includes the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to be shared between the United States, Canada and Mexico.

It will also include the 2027 Women’s World Cup and the men’s tournament in 2030, both due to be awarded at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok on May 17 next year.

"We welcome Mengniu once again as an official sponsor of the FIFA Women's World Cup and the FIFA World Cup, all the way through until 2030," said FIFA's chief business officer Romy Gai.

"Mengniu is a world-class dairy brand that provides vital support for people's health through its nutritious and delicious products.

"Mengniu has also been committed to promoting the development of global sports.

"We look forward to re-joining forces with Mengniu and delivering even more exciting football spectacles to fans worldwide at FIFA's upcoming flagship tournaments for both women and men."

Under its initial sponsorship deal, Mengniu’s products are official drinkable yoghurt and pre-packaged ice cream of the World Cup and the official milk and powdered milk of the World Cup for Greater China.

In 2019, Mengniu signed a unique deal with the International Olympic Committee that saw it sharing ownership of the worldwide beverage category for the Olympic Movement until 2032.

The partnership with FIFA was initially part of a strategy by the company, whose headquarters are in Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, to help rebuild its reputation following two huge scandals.

In 2008, Mengniu was among companies named for having powdered milk samples which tested positive for melamine.

The company recalled tainted powdered milks and apologised to the public after a scandal which resulted in kidney stones and other kidney damage in 300,000 infants in China.

Then in 2011, Mengniu was forced to destroy batches of milk after it was found to be contaminated with a cancer-causing substance.

"Our continued collaboration with FIFA reflects the esteem with which Mengniu’s product quality and brand philosophy are held internationally," Mengniu Group chief executive Jeffrey Lu said.

"The FIFA Women’s World Cup and FIFA World Cup will continue to serve as important platforms to showcase Chinese brands to the world."
