Adolf Scherer, who played a leading role for the Czechoslovakia team that contested the 1962 FIFA World Cup final in Chile against Brazil, has died aged 85.

Scherer, who scored 22 goals in his 36 games for his country, created the opener for his team in the final at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago as his long through-ball enabled Josef Masopust to score after 15 minutes.

Brazil, the defending champions, equalised within two minutes through Amarildo and retained the trophy through second-half goals from Zito and Vava.

Scherer’s three goals earlier in the tournament included the effort that earned them a 1-0 quarter-final win over Hungary at the Estadio El Teniente in Rancaguaand two goals in the 3-1 semi-final win over Yugoslavia at the Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar.

Two years earlier he was a member of the Czechoslovakia team that won the third place playoff match 2-0 against the hosts France at the European Championships at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille.

"Dolfi was unique, unrepeatable, always his own," said the Slovak Football Federation in a statement.

"He has had his place in the Slovak Football Hall of Fame since its birth in 2016 - a good person.”

Scherer , who played in the top domestic division for 10 years, won the Czechoslovak title in 1959 with Červená hvězda Bratislava and finished with a record of 260 games and 128 goals.

In France, to which he later emigrated, he worked for Nimes Olympique and Olympique Avignonais.

Scherer is survived by four of his fellow squad members from the 1962 World Cup - Jan Lála, Jozef Štibrányi, Josef Jelínek and Václav Mašek.

Masopust, voted European Footballer of the Year for 1962, died in 2015.
