Polish gymnastics star Liliana Lewińska has spoken of her excitement at fighting for multiple medals at the International Gymnastics Federation Junior World Championships, set to begin in Cluj-Napoca, Romania tomorrow.

The 14-year-old has swept through the International Gymnastics Federation’s major junior competitions by taking gold or silver medals and is set to line-up for her first World Championships, under the guidance of her mother and coach Krystyna Leśkiewicz-Lewińska, who competed at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta in the rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around competition.

Lewińska is set to compete in a full programme of individual qualifications, across hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon in Cluj-Napoca, and says she is excited at the prospect of contesting a full set of events.

"I have been doing the full all-around from the very beginning, wherever possible," she said.

"I am used to doing four routines - if sometimes I can do two or three, I miss something, I feel weird."

Reflecting on her debut at the Junior European Championships in Tel Aviv last year, which saw her take silver medals in hoop and club disciplines, as well as bronze in the ribbon, and reach the balls final, Lewińska spoke of her happiness with her achievements.

"I was very happy for this great success for me and my mother," she said. "However my dream is to hear and sing the Polish anthem at the next European or World Championships standing on the top step of the podium."

Her mum Krystyna added: "It was an amazing experience, I will not hide that I had tears of happiness and joy in my eyes.

"Before the European Championships, Liliana already had a very strong position on the international arena, after Tel Aviv this strengthened even more."

Leśkiewicz-Lewińska is the head coach of the Polish rhythmic gymnastics national team, and head coach and President of the UKS Kopernik Wroclaw Club, where both Liliana and her other daughter Laura train.

Asked about the advantages and challenges of their relationship, Lewińska said: "The biggest advantage is that I know my mother wants the best for me, that she will never let me down, I trust her like no one else.

"The challenge? Well, at events and hotels, just like at home, my mother gets nervous when my things or my room are messy!"

Her mum Krystyna added: "Lila is a mature girl, she doesn’t require much special attention.

"Sometimes when we come back from a hard training session, there is absolute silence in the car, but when we enter home, we leave it behind."

Junior individual and group titles are up for grabs in Cluj-Napoca, with competition scheduled to conclude on Sunday (July 9).
