Pablo Figuereo produced a perfect batting average to guide the Dominican Republic to a commanding win over Mexico for men's softball gold at the San Salvador 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games.

The right fielder connected for three hits from as many at bats which also resulted in a hat-trick of runs as his side prevailed 8-3.

Fans at the 3,000-capacity Estadio de Sóftbol Pablo Guzmán witnessed a cagey start to the final, with the first innings ending 0-0, before the Dominican Republic exploded into life with a three-run second innings.

Despite two more scoreless periods in the fourth and fifth, the Dominicans never ceded their advantage.

A further three scores in their final two innings ensured they developed an insurmountable lead.

In addition to Figuereo's leading batting performance, Yan Gonzalez excelled from the mound with nine strikeouts to stunt the Mexican attack.

The result prevented Mexico from extending their overall lead in the medals table but they still maintain a healthy advantage over second-place Colombia with 64 golds to 41.

The Dominican Republic, meanwhile, sit sixth with six golds.

The country picked up another medal elsewhere on the day as the first handball medals were also won at the Multigimnasio Don Bosco.

They were unable to seal gold but denied Mexico victory again with a 29-27 triumph in the women's bronze medal-match.

Nancy Peña and Mariela Andino inspired a second-half comeback with six goals each from seven shots.

Their clinical conversion rate was key as Mexico fired waywardly from the hip, shown by top scorer Gemma Leal who scored six but also wasted six while three more players also shot under 50 per cent.

The gold medal went the way of Cuba as they prevailed 29-28 against Puerto Rico after extra-time.

The men's tournament is now due to start, with the finals scheduled for Friday (July 7).
