World number one Nouran Gohar proved why she is the world’s top female player by winning the longest ever women’s match on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour.

Her victory over fellow Egyptian and world number three Hania El Hammamy earned her the PSA World Tour Finals trophy, and a place in the record books as she won an epic match that lasted 130 minutes.

Gohar triumphed 10-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 12-10 in a contest that broke the previous record by 10 minutes, recorded by Mexico’s Samantha Teran and Latasha Khan of the United States at the 2008 Liberty Bell Open.

El Hammamy won the opening game on a sudden death deciding point, a new rule being trialled at the tournament.

A match that featured several lengthy rallies included a final game that lasted 43 minutes, with a volley drop shot sealing victory.

Victory saw Gohar secure a second PSA World Tour Finals title, while the lengthy nature of the match means the two players now account for three of the top ten longest women’s matches since records began on the tour.

In the men’s final, also held on the Glass Court in Cairo, Egypt, home player Mostafa Asal won the title for the third year in a row, after overcoming Peru’s Diego Elias, the first South American player to reach the final of this tournament, in four games.

The world number four is the second male squash player to win three successive World Tour Finals titles, after Scotland's Peter Nicol, who managed the feat between 1999 and 2001.

Elias took the first game 11-9 before Asal showed the form that has seen him win the last two editions of this tournament, by taking game two 11-6.

Despite it initially being a scrappy contest Asal then overpowered his opponent, winning the next two games 11-3 and 11-5 to take the win and his 12th PSA World Tour title.

This tournament brings the curtain down on the 2022-2023 PSA World Tour squash season, with the next campaign due to start in August with bronze level tournaments in Malaysia and Canada.
