Equatorial Guinea has been confirmed as host for the third edition of the African Beach Games.

The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) General Assembly took place in Hammamet on the opening day of this year's African Beach Games.

The meeting in the Tunisian town saw members vote in favour of Equatorial Guinea's candidacy and as a result the country is due to host the Games in 2027, although exact dates are yet to be confirmed.

Equatorial Guinea, a Central African country comprising the Rio Muni mainland and five volcanic offshore islands, will follow Hammamet and the first edition of the African Beach Games in Sal in Cape Verde in 2019.

Solitary competition in beach volleyball marked day one of the Games in Tunisia following the Opening Ceremony that was led by the nation's Sports Minister Kamel Deguiche.

"It is a great day for Tunisia to see the whole of Africa gathered under one roof, that of Hammamet, City of Jasmines, symbol of purity and sharing and Torchbearer of the legendary hospitality of the whole of Tunisia, crossroads of civilisations of more than 3,000 years, with imperishable imprints on the sense of welcome and living together of all Tunisians," said Tunisian Olympic Committee President Mehrez Boussayene.

"We owe it to ANOCA and to our President Mustapha Berraf for the valuable support we have received.

"Together we will win.

"May our General Assembly be a new chance for peace."

The meeting also saw the presentation of the ANOCA Executive Committee's activity report, a report from the Ethics Commission, and Olympic Solidarity director James Macleod present plans to develop sport in Africa.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach also delivered a video message to delegates.

"It is always a great pleasure to address the Olympic community in Africa," he said.

"Africa has an important place on the international sports scene.

"Your General Assembly will be an opportunity to strengthen this place and reaffirm the unity of your community."

Competition is set to continue tomorrow at the African Beach Games with events in handball, 4x4 volleyball, rowing sprints, karate, and teqball due to take place.
