Both Tokyo 2020 Olympics singles gold medallists enjoyed success at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Indonesian Open in Jakarta.

World and Olympic men’s singles champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark won his third consecutive title at the event after beating home favourite Anthony Ginsing 21-14, 21-13 to win.

It was Axelsen’s second title of the year but his first since injuring a hamstring at the Sudirman Cup in Suzhou, China, last month.

"Winning this for the third time is crazy," Axelsen admitted.

"I want to thank all the Indonesian badminton fans even though, of course, you were supporting your local hero,

"He's been playing so well recently and I'm looking forward to many more encounters against him."

Axelsen had not dropped a game in the entire tournament.

In the women’s singles China’s Chen Yufei defeated Spain’s Carolina Marín, her predecessor as Olympic champion, to claim a first Indonesian Open crown.

Chen beat Marín 21-18, 21-19 in a contest which lasted an hour and four minutes, to record her first BWF Super 1000 title since Tokyo 2020.

"I respect Marín a lot, even though she has had two major injuries, she didn't give up and is still training," Chen said.

"Her attack is powerful, this is something I can still learn."

In the men's doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty became the first Indians to win a BWF Super 1000 doubles title when they defeated Malaysia's world champion pairing Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 21-17, 21-18.

It was a remarkable turnaround for the pair after their first-round exit in their previous tournament in Singapore.

"It’s a happy performance after a bad month, it was a wake-up call for us, the last two tournaments, to be alert, or be smashed in the first round itself," admitted Rankireddy.

Rankireddy and Shetty had lost to the same opponents in eight previous meetings.

"We played with a lot of conviction, we stuck to the gameplan, we knew they are humans, eventually they will make mistakes, so till the end we didn’t give them a chance," Shetty revealed.

"This victory is also a testament to how fast Indian badminton is climbing the doubles ladder globally," Badminton Association of India general secretary Sanjay Mishra said.

In women's doubles, fifth seeds Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee of South Korea defeated Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota 22-20, 21-10.

It was their first Super 1000 title and a reversal of the result when the pairs met in April at the Badminton Asia Championships in Dubai.

Then Fukushima and Hirota had won in straight games.

In the mixed doubles Olympic silver medallists Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong claimed their second successive Indonesian Open title by beating Yuna Watanabe and Arisa Higashino 21-14, 21-11 in only 35 minutes.

"We're feeling wonderful, this is the perfect ending, to have won the last Indonesian Open and all three Super 1000 tournaments so far this year," Zheng said.
