Women's EuroBasket co-hosts Slovenia's hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds have been crushed after they fell to Germany in what was the country's first win in the competition for 12 years.

The Germans erupted with joy when the final buzzer sounded and confirmed their 66-62 triumph at the Arena Stožice in Slovenian capital Ljubljana.

The result, combined with a 63-57 French win over Britain, meant that Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists France advanced to the quarter-finals from Group C.

In Group A, Latvia were unable to continue their form from yesterday that resulted in a shock victory over Spain.

They were defeated by Greece 73-65 mainly due to Maria Fasoula's performance that saw her amass 22 points and 11 rebounds.

The other fixture in the group saw Spain pull off a late surge to beat Montenegro 78-57.

Maria Conde stood out with 20 points as they outscored their opponents 26-6 in the last quarter.

Blowout results took place in Group B as Belgium secured their quarter-final spot by beating the Czech Republic 84-41, while Italy recorded their first win of the tournament with an 88-68 triumph over Israel.

The race for the next round is still wide open in Group D as just two points separate first-placed Serbia and bottom of the table Slovakia.

The Serbians won today's tie between the two countries 90-52 to take their tally to four points while Turkey edged Hungary 69-68 to lay temporary claim to second place.

The competition takes a break tomorrow before the group stage concludes on Sunday (June 18).
