The Chief Minister of the Indian state of Manipur has announced increased prize money for Commonwealth Games medallists.

According to Eastern Mirror, N Biren Singh has said that Commonwealth Games gold medallists will receive INR20 lakh ($24,132/£20,050/€22,770) instead of 15, silver medallists will get INR15 lakh ($18,099/£15,036/€17,076) instead of 10 and all participants will get INR 4 lakh ($4,826/£4,008/€4,553).

Cash incentives were increased for National Games medallists and coaches as well.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the 49 kilograms gold at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Another Manipuri weightlifter, Sorokhaibam Bindyarani Devi, won silver in the 55kg category.

Sushila Devi Likmabam in judo, Nilakanta Sharma in men's hockey and Shushila Chanu Pukhrambam in women's hockey are the other athletes from the state who medalled in the English city.

Many State Governments in India give away cash incentives for athletes who win medals in the Commonwealth Games.

The Indian Olympic Association also gave athletes who won medals at Birmingham 2022 prize money based on their achievements.

India bagged 61 medals - 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze - at Birmingham 2022.
