Two of the medallists from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were eliminated from the men's water polo tournament at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Championships here, with Serbia losing to Croatia and hosts Hungary beaten by defending champions Italy.

Back-to-back Olympic champions Serbia missed out on the semi-finals of the World Championship for the second edition running, after they went down 14-12 to Croatia, who claimed gold when the event was held in Budapest in 2017.

Croatia held a slender 5-4 half-time advantage.

Both sides then scored five times in the third quarter, before Croatia completed the win by scoring four goals to their opponents' three in the fourth quarter.

Olympic bronze medallists Hungary had a boisterous home crowd behind them for their late match against Italy, and it helped Hungary get off to a strong start as they led 3-2 after the first quarter.

However, a strong second quarter from Italy had them 6-5 in front at the midpoint, and they extended their advantage to 11-7 with some slick attacking play to move to the brink of the semi-finals.

Hungary threatened a stunning comeback with three goals late in the fourth quarter, but it was not quite enough and they went down 11-10.

Croatia will play the 2019 runners-up Spain in Friday's (July 1) semi-finals, after they narrowly overcame Montenegro 7-6.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallists Greece await Italy in another exciting tie after their 16-11 victory against the United States.

In today's diving finals at the Duna Arena, China continued their domination by adding a further three gold medals to their haul.

Quan Hongchan and Bai Yuming triumphed in the mixed team 3 metres and 10m event, easing to victory with 391.40 points.

In the women's 1m springboard final, Li Yajie survived a strong challenge from Canada's Mia Vallée to take gold.

Vallée led by 7.30 points after three rounds of diving, but scored just 51.75 for a back 1.5 somersaults pike in the fourth to slip to second, and in the end had to settle for bronze after the lowest-scoring dive of the last round - 48.10 for a forward 1.5 somersaults with two twists.

Li topped the scoring in the fourth and fifth rounds with 69.00 for a reverse dive with 2.5 somersaults tuck and 62.40 for a reverse 1.5 somersaults with 1.5 twists.

She finished with 300.85 points, with the US' Sarah Bacon taking silver with 276.65 after a final 57.20 forward 2.5 somersaults pike.

Vallée finished just 0.05 further back on 276.60.

Zhu Zifeng and Lin Shan continued China's perfect record in the mixed 3m springboard synchronised event.

They topped the scoring in all five rounds to finish on 324.15.

Italy's Matteo Santoro and Chiara Pellacani placed second with 293.55, while Britain's James Heatly and Grace Reid were third with 287.61.

There was further drama in the open water swimming at Lupa Beach, with another close finish in the women's 10 kilometres race.

Rio 2016 Olympic champion and Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Sharon van Rouwendaal of The Netherlands triumphed in 2 hours 2min 29.20sec, edging out Germany's Leonie Beck by just half of a second.

Olympic champion Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil, who won 5km gold on Monday (June 27), took bronze in 2:02.30.

The men's 10km race was marked by an Italian one-two, led by men's 1,500m freestyle world champion Gregorio Paltrinieri.

Paltrinieri clocked 1:50:56.80, beating his compatriot Domenico Acerenza by 1.40sec.

The Olympic champion also placed third in the men's race, with Germany's Florian Wellbrock finishing in 1:51:11.20, meaning that France's Marc-Antoine Olivier missed out by 0.30.

Open water swimming competition is due to conclude tomorrow with the women's and men's 25km races.

Diving finals are scheduled in the men's 1m springboard and women's 10m synchronised, and the women's water polo semi-finals feature Olympic and world champions the US against Italy, followed by hosts Hungary against The Netherlands.
