The National Teqball Federation of Ukraine (NTFU) has held an event in the capital Kyiv allowing soldiers fighting in the war against Russia to play the sport.

NTFU President Denis Vilenkin is serving as a volunteer of the Pechersk territorial defence unit, and was among those present at Kyiv's Independence Square.

Offering soldiers from the unit the opportunity to try teqball was billed as an opportunity to "raise the fighting spirit" and "get acquainted with the new, young game".

Players from the Ukrainian national team participated in the event, including Kateryna Fesenko, who is ninth on the International Federation of Teqball's women's singles world rankings, and Dmitriy Masalyov.

Both Fesenko and Masalyov have competed at two Teqball World Championships.

The NTFU hopes to organise a teqball tournament after the end of the conflict in Ukraine.

The International Teqball Federation (FITEQ) worked with the French National Teqball Federation and Portuguese Teqball Federation to ensure that athletes and their families could compete at the World Series event in Paris.

A fundraising auction for Ukrainian athletes was held at the competition in the French capital, featuring signed shirts from Brazilian footballer and FITEQ ambassador Ronaldinho.

The International Federation has also provided essential items to the Hungarian Red Cross.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

Moscow has been widely condemned for what it describes as a "special military operation", and has largely been frozen out of international sport.

Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials have been banned from all FITEQ events, in line with International Olympic Committee recommendations.

The United Nations has reported that at least 1,982 civilians have been killed since the beginning of its attack, although it is feared the true figure is far higher, and more than 4.8 million refugees have fled Ukraine.
