The American racer’s participation at Beijing 2022 was thrown into doubt when she tested positive for COVID-19 two days after arriving in the Chinese capital.

The three-time Olympic medallist spent several days in isolation, forcing her to miss the Opening Ceremony, where she was due to carry the United States flag.

The COVID-19 infection was a big setback for Meyers who has been in superb form this season having finished top of the Women’s Monobob Series standings and captured the two-woman World Cup crown.

But after recording consecutive negative coronavirus tests, Meyers Taylor was released from quarantine and able to return to training.

The 37-year-old is a four-time world champion but has yet to secure Olympic gold having notched bronze at Vancouver 2010 and silvers at Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018.

She will now have two bites of the cherry as she will compete in the women’s monobob, scheduled to make its Olympic debut tomorrow and Monday (February 14), before participating in the two-woman bobsleigh on February 18 and 19 along with Lake Kwaza.

The women’s monobob will make its first appearance at the Winter Olympics after being approved as a bobsleigh disicipline by the International Olympic Committee Executive Board in July 2018.

Kaillie Humphries is set to challenge Meyers Taylor in both the monobob and two-woman competitions.

The 36-year-old is a two-time two-woman gold medallist and claimed bronze at Pyeongchang 2018 but this will be the first Games where she will be representing the US.

She switched allegiances from Canada over abuse allegations made against Canadian head coach Todd Hays before gaining a full US citizenship in December.

Mariama Jamanka and Lisa Buckwitz are the reigning Olympic two-woman champion but Laura Notle with Deborah Levi are set to be Germany’s biggest gold-medal hopes in the event following a strong World Cup campaign.

Germany will also be looking to dominate the men’s events, with Francesco Friedrich expected to secure gold in both the two-man and four-man competitions.

Friedrich is the dominant force in men’s bobsleigh, winning world gold on 11 occasions and topping the two-man and four-man World Cup standings for four successive seasons.

He will be aiming to defend both Olympic titles at the National Sliding Centre in Yanqing, teaming up with Thorsten Margis in the two-man before joining a strong four-man crew.

"We feel good but we have some things to improve," said Friedrich.

"Everybody knows that my concentration in the races is much higher than in the training and I think we should be all OK.

"We achieved what we want, I think."

Competition starts tomorrow with women’s monobob heats and is due to run until February 20 with the four-man.
