Peter Wright will face Michael Smith in the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Darts Championship final, after both won through thrilling semi-finals.

Second seed Wright, the 2020 world champion, defeated fellow Scottish player Gary Anderson, the sixth seed and winner of this event in 2015 and 2016, 6-4 in a high-quality contest.

Both players averaged over 100, with Wright finishing on an average of 104.38 and with 24 180s.

Wright got off to the best start taking a two-set lead, winning the second set in a deciding leg with a double eight.

He then extended his lead to 3-0, before Anderson won the next two, including the fifth with a 105 finish, to reduce the gap to 3-2.

Wright was one dart away from a perfect leg in the sixth, a set he won to extend his advantage to two once more.

A 134 helped Anderson stay on his opponent’s tail at 4-3, before Wright won the eighth set with an 11-dart leg to put himself a set away from victory.

Anderson would not go away and broke throw to reduce the gap to 5-4, and Wright closed the contest out under extreme pressure in the deciding leg of set ten thanks to a 116 finish.

Earlier in the night’s other semi-final 2019 runner-up Michael Smith, the ninth seed, beat fellow Englishman James Wade, the fourth seed, 6-3.

Former world youth champion Smith produced a strong performance averaging over 100.98 and landing 16 180s.

After taking the first set in a deciding leg an early break of throw helped Smith to a two-set lead.

Wade produced a key 121 checkout to win set three, before Smith won the fourth from two legs behind to lead 3-1.

Smith’s momentum continued as he opened a 5-1 lead, before Wade ended a seven-leg losing streak and won the next two to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Smith then earned victory in the ninth set making a double ten to secure a place in a second World Championship final.

Wright and Smith are scheduled to compete for the Sid Waddell Trophy at Alexandra Palace in London tomorrow night, with the contest over the best of 13 sets.
