Armenia's Robert Hovhannisyan is the sole leader of the European Individual Chess Championship after remaining unbeaten through four rounds in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Hovhannisyan defeated Niclas Huschenbeth of Germany 1-0 using an early pawn grab in his favour later in the contest as he claimed a narrow win.

The top board saw an all-Russian matchup between Alexey Sarana and Mikhail Antipov which ended half a point apiece.

The tournament's number one seed, Gawain Jones of England was defeated 1-0 by Iceland's Hannes Stefansson.

Hovhannes Gabuzyan of Armenia and Poland's Kacper Piorun had not dropped a point before their meeting today and that remains the case after the contest ended half a point apiece.

Number two seed Armenian Gabriel Sargissian met Hedinn Steingrimsson of the home country Iceland, with Sargissian winning 1-0.

Despite being seeded third in the tournament, the Czech Republic's David Navara went toe-to-toe with Velimir Ivic of Serbia, with Navara a 1-0 winner.

The other standout fixture saw fifth seed Matthias Bluebaum of Germany take on Russian Anton Demchenko, with Demchenko also triumphing 1-0.

Behind Hovhannisyan 13 players are in a share of second place.
