Switzerland's Marco Odermatt was a clear winner in the men's giant slalom in the second International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup race in Santa Caterina in Italy.

Winning his first giant slalom World Cup race, the 23-year-old posted the best time on run one to finish ahead of the United States' Tommy Ford and Croatia's Filip Zubčić.

This race took place today after the second race on Sunday was postponed due to unfavourable snow conditions.

Odermatt's victory is his second on the World Cup circuit following a win in the super-G nearly a year to the day, on December 6 2019 at Beaver Creek in the US.

After five giant slalom podiums, Odermatt achieved his first win.

He is also a two-time giant slalom world junior champion from 2016 and 2018.

Odermatt won six gold medals at the two Championships and also picked up a gold.

Ford, who won the giant slalom in Beaver Creek two days after Odermatt last year, made it on the World Cup podium for a third time after two consistent runs won him the silver medal, 0.73 seconds behind the Swiss skier.

Saturday's winner Zubčić had the best weekend overall, but could only finish third today following a poor first run that saw him over a second behind the leader.

His second run was the best by a large margin, getting him the bronze by a small margin, as he finished 0.75 off the lead.

Loic Meillard of Switzerland was narrowly denied a medal in fourth, while a poor second run from France's Alexis Pinturault saw him drop to fifth.

Odermatt became the first men's giant slalom winner from Switzerland since March 5 2011 when Carlo Janka won in Kranjska Gora in Slovenia.

The next leg of the men's tour is set to take place in Val d'Isère in France on December 12 and 13 for downhill and super-G events.
