The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) has launched its search for bids for the 2022 Powerchair Hockey World Championship.

The event was last held in 2018 in Lignano Sabbiadoro in Italy.

Those interested in hosting the next edition have been asked to send a letter of intent to IWAS by July 31.

IWAS has stated that it aims to have powerchair hockey on the sport programme for future Paralympic Games, but stressed that regular regional and world tournaments must be organised to make that happen.

In a statement, IWAS said: "We proudly look back on a very successful IWAS Powerchair Hockey World Championship in 2018: the efforts of the Italian organisers with all the volunteers, the high-level games of all the participating nations and the enthusiasm of all of those spectators and sponsors made it a great success."

Hosting the 2022 edition, it said, "is an excellent opportunity for your nation to show the world the development of Powerchair Hockey in your nation and worldwide."

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IWAS Powerchair Hockey European Championship was moved back to 2021, having been scheduled to take place in Finland this month.

The 2020 date had meant there was either a World Championship or European Championship every two years.

Italy are the reigning powerchair hockey world champions after defeating Denmark 2-1 in the 2018 final.
