Clive Lloyd, the Manchester-based former West Indies cricketer who captained his country as they dominated the game in the 1970s and 80s, has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.

Baroness Sue Campbell, director of women’s football at the Football Association, has been awarded a damehood for services to sport.

Now 71, she served as chair of UK Sport from 2003 to 2013 during a period of growing success for the British Olympic team.

Double Olympic taekwondo champion Jade Jones, former golf major winner and Solheim Cup captain Catriona Matthew, England and Manchester City footballer Jill Scott and triple Olympic medallist Kelly Sotherton have also been honoured.

Lloyd's former team-mate Gordon Greenidge and England’s Ben Stokes are among the other cricketers on the list.

Greenidge, an opening batsman in those West Indies glory years, has also been knighted on the recommendation of the Government of his native Barbados.

Stokes has been awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) at the end of a year in which he scored an unbeaten 84 as England won the World Cup and then produced a match-winning 135 not out in the third Ashes Test.

The New Zealand-born all-rounder received the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award earlier this month.

England’s World Cup captain Eoin Morgan has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) while wicket-keeper Jos Buttler and Test captain Joe Root have been awarded as Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Former Kent and England player Alan Knott, regarded as one of the greatest wicket-keepers, has been awarded an MBE.

Jones, who won taekwondo gold at the last two Olympics and won the world title in Manchester this year, got an OBE, as did Matthew.

Scott, who led England to the World Cup semi-finals on home soil, received an MBE, as did heptathlete Sotherton, who received two of her Olympic bronzes retrospectively following disqualifications of original medallists for doping.

Broadcaster and former gymnast Gabby Logan and Laura Massaro, the former world squash champion who announced her retirement in 2019, also receive MBEs,

England’s strong performance at this year’s sold-out Netball World Cup is also recognised with MBEs for team captain Serena Guthrie and goal shooter Joanna Harten.

British Gymnastics chief executive Jane Allen also receives the MBE, as does Northern Irish runner Michael McKillop, who has taken gold at the last three Paralympic Games.

There is an MBE for former Northern Ireland captain Aaron Hughes, who won 112 international caps before retiring in June.

Commonwealth bronze-winning hockey player Barry Middleton, who announced his retirement earlier in 2019, and 12-time Commonwealth Games weightlifting medallist Dave Morgan also become MBEs.
