The Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC) has marked United Nations International Youth Day by hailing the progress made in youth sport in the country in the past year.

JOC secretary general Nasser Majali claimed the day, which fell on Monday (August 12), was a "great opportunity for the JOC to promote all of the excellent work that is being done to inspire a more active and healthy society in Jordan".

Majali cited the nation sending its largest team to a Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires last year as proof of the development made in Jordanian youth sport.

Jordan claimed one bronze medal at the event as taekwondo player Zaid Mustafa won bronze in the boys' 55 kilograms division.

"By reflecting on the past year, we can see what we have done well and also identify areas that we can improve in," Majali said.

"The Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games 2018 were a particularly important learning period for us.

"We were proud to win a bronze medal, but equally proud to send our biggest-ever team to compete in the world’s biggest youth sporting event.

"There were many lessons that we learned that we are now incorporating into our youth-focused initiatives.”

The JOC began a new national sports strategy for sport in 2017.

The organisation claims it was launched to ensure sport plays a greater role in the lives of all Jordanians and said it has "had a significant impact on the development of young athletes at both an elite and grassroots level".
