Substitute Elmutasem Abushnaf struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Libya progressed to the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship at the expense of Rwanda in Morocco.

Rwanda looked to have done enough to secure the point which would send them through to the last eight before Abushnaf came off the bench to earn his side a 1-0 victory at the Stade Ibn Batouta in Tangier.

Nigeria secured top spot in Group C with a comfortable 3-1 win over Equatorial Guinea at the Stade Adrar in Agadir.

Libya knew they would have to beat their Rwandan opponents if they were to stand any chance of prolonging their stay at the tournament for home-based African players and they pressed forward in search of the opener right from the off.

But they could not find a way through a stubborn Rwandan defence, which held firm right until the third minute of added time.

Abushnaf was in the right place at the right time as he swept home a low cross to claim all three points for his side and break Rwandan hearts.

The result saw Libya progress alongside Nigeria, who finished the group stage with seven points.

Libya followed in second with six as Rwanda were consigned to third place, two points off a spot in the knock-out round.

Secundino Eyama Nsi gave Equatorial Guinea a shock lead in their clash with Nigeria before Anthony Okpotu equalised on the hour mark.

Ekundayo Ojo scored a goal of the tournament contender to put the Nigerians in front before victory was sealed with a late penalty from Rabiu Ali.
