China's Olympic silver medallist Fan Kexin suffered a surprise early exit from the women's 1,000 metres event at the International Skating Union Short Track World Cup as being disqualified for impeding an opponent in Shanghai.

Fan was among the host nation's main hopes for a medal in the 1,000m competition at the Oriental Sports Center but was eliminated at the preliminary round stage.

"I'll improve myself in the next two months," the 24-year-old was quoted as saying by China's official news agency Xinhua.  

"I want to become strong enough to avoid any penalty. 

"It's a lesson for me today."

South Korea had no such troubles as they produced a dominant qualification display in both the men's and women's 1,000m events.

Shim Suk-hee, part of the South Korean team which won the Olympic gold medal in the 3,000m relay at Sochi 2014, eased to victory in her her heat in 1min 32.397sec.

The Olympic 1,000m bronze medallist was joined in progressing to the quarter-finals by team-mates Lee Yu-bin and Kim A-lang.

Arianna Fontana of Italy, Valerie Maltais of Canada and Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands also booked their places in the next round.

In the men's 1,000m event, Park Se-yeong, the world champion over the distance at Moscow in 2015, was the fastest qualifier in a time of 1:25.949.

Compatriot Hwang Dae-heon also won his heat, securing a quarter-final spot by clocking 1:27.512.

Olympic champion Charles Hamelin of Canada and John-Henry Krueger of the United States joined the South Koreans in progressing to the quarter-finals.

Chinese duo Wu Dajing and Han Tianyu squeezed through to the next round as they qualified as runners-up.

The event in Shanghai is due to continue tomorrow.
