Los Angeles 2028 chairman Casey Wasserman has congratulated Andrew Parsons on his election as President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Parsons was confirmed as the successor to Sir Philip Craven after he claimed an opening-round victory at the governing body's General Assembly in Abu Dhabi on Friday (September 8).

The Brazilian's election has been welcomed by Wasserman, who said Los Angeles 2028 were looking forward to working with the new IPC administration in the build-up to the Paralympic Games in 11 years' time.

Los Angeles are due to be formally announced as the host city for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session here on Wednesday (September 13).

Paris will be awarded the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Wasserman also hailed American Paralympian Muffy Davis' election to the IPC's ruling Governing Board.

"Los Angeles 2028 congratulates Andrew Parsons on his election as President of the IPC," Wasserman said.

"Under the leadership of President Parsons, vice-president Duane Kale and the newly elected members of the IPC Governing Board, I have no doubt the IPC will build on Sir Philip Craven's successes and continue leading the Paralympic Movement forward.

"In 1984, Los Angeles was the first host city to showcase Paralympic sport during the Olympic Games.

"Now, Los Angeles 2028 looks forward to working with the IPC to deliver an outstanding Paralympic Games and break new ground again for the Paralympic Movement.

“Congratulations too to US Paralympian Muffy Davis on her election to the IPC Governing Board.

"I hope she can play a big role in making the LA 2028 Paralympic Games a wonderful experience for the Paralympians of the world."

Parsons achieved the required absolute majority of 82 votes at the first time of asking, amassing a tally of 84.

China's Zhang Haidi finished second with 47 votes, followed by Denmark's John Petersson with 19 and Canada's Patrick Jarvis with 12.

Parsons was President of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee during the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and served as IPC vice-president for four years.

The 40-year-old becomes only the third President of the IPC, succeeding Sir Philip, whose 16-year tenure has come to an end.

Sir Philip has since been removed from the list of IOC members.
