World champions Germany have won the 2017 Confederations Cup after beating Chile 1-0 at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg.

The Europeans capitalised on a catastrophic defensive error to score the only goal of the game and win their first Confederations Cup title.

In the 20th minute, defender Marcelo Diaz turned on the ball just outside the Chilean box, unaware that German forward Timo Werner was over his shoulder.

The German snatched possession from his opponent and squared the ball to team-mate Lars Stindl, who simply tapped it into the net.

Germany should have doubled their lead before the break after another error.

Gonzalo Jara's mistake let in Leon Goretzka, but goalkeeper Claudio Bravo did well to block the effort.

Chile's Arturo Vidal and Angelo Sagal both blazed chances over the bar in the closing stages as Germany went onto seal victory.

Earlier today, Portugal secured the tournament's bronze medal after coming from behind to beat Mexico 2-1 in extra time at the Otkritie Arena in Moscow.

Portuguese forward Andre Silva had missed from the penalty spot in the first half before Mexico claimed the breakthrough.

Defender Neto inadvertently deflected Mexican forward Javier Hernandez's cross into the net after 54 minutes.

Mexico were on the brink of sealing third place before Portugal defender Pepe stretched out a leg to steer in a Ricardo Quaresma cross in stoppage time to send the game to another 30 minutes.

In the 104th minute, a penalty from substitute Adrien Silva, following a Miguel Layun handball, wrapped up victory for the European champions.
