Home star Douglas Brose led his Brazilian side to the team kumite crown as the host nation finished the Pan American Karate Championships in style by finishing in pole position on the medals table in Rio de Janeiro.

Two-time world champion Brose had already secured the under 60 kilograms crown yesterday and was again in superb form, taking team gold along with Hernani Verissimo, Alberto Azevedo, Wellington Barbosa and Breno Texeira.

The Brazilian outfit comfortably overcame Venezuela in the final, while Chile and Canada were the recipients of the bronze medals.

It proved to be another dominant day for the home karatekas, who ended the day having topped the podium in three events.

Brazil’s female kumite side also enjoyed a golden conclusion to the competition in the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games host city as they ousted Venezuela 2-0 in what proved to be a tense affair.

Their success was thanks largely to an inspired performance from Valeria Kumizaki, who was ably backed up by Bianca and Beatriz Mafra.

The United States and Ecuador clinched a bronze apiece to join Brazil and Venezuela on the podium.

A fluent exhibition of the kata discipline from the hosts had earlier ensured they took the women's team crown in the event, overcoming the Dominican Republic, whose squad boasted individual medallists Maria Dimitrova and Franchel Velazquez, 4-1.

Peru and Canada were able to end their respective competitions on a high with bronze.

The Peruvian contingent at the Pan American Karate Championships did have some success to revel in on the final day, saving their best until last by picking up their maiden gold in the men’s team kata with a split 3-2 win over Argentina.

The hosts and Costa Rica took bronze.

Brazil ended comfortably at the top of the medals table with a haul of 13, including six golds, two silvers and five bronze.
