World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) President Chungwon Choue has visited the scene of the recent terrorist attack in Istanbul to pay his respects to the 10 people killed.

Choue was joined by WTF and European Taekwondo Union (ETU) delegations near the celebrated Blue Mosque in the historic centre of the Turkish city.

He laid flowers at the memorial created to remember the victims before giving a message of support to those affected by the attack, which took place on Tuesday (January 12).

Turkish authorities have claimed the attack was the work of a 28-year-old Syrian suicide bomber from the Islamic State group, who entered Turkey on January 5 posing as a refugee.

According to local media reports, a Turkish court has charged 10 people over the bombing which left 10 German tourists dead and another 17 people wounded.

Charged with belonging to a terrorist organisation, they have all been remanded in custody following a hearing yesterday, Doğan News Agency reports.

Six others who also appeared before the court in Istanbul were set to be released, the Agency added.

The suspects, whose nationalities were not disclosed, were also said to have links to the Islamic State.

Choue and the two delegations were in Istanbul for the European Qualification Tournament for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which concluded yesterday.
