Isaev defeated Russia’s Vladislav Larin in dramatic fashion to take his country’s final medal tally in the sport to five, including three golds, and ensure they finished top of the standings.

The 25-year-old, winner of the gold medal in the under 87kg category at last month’s World Championships in Chelyabinsk, saw a 3-1 lead cancelled out in the third round of the final and looked to have thrown away his chances when Larin was awarded a fourth point for a hit with just seconds remaining on the clock.

But, just as quickly as the scoreboard had changed in the Russian's favour, the hit was disallowed with Larin receiving a penalty that gave Isaev the decisive point to win 4-3. 

"Now I have 40 qualification points for the Rio [2016] Olympics so this is a kind of a trampoline for me," said Isaev, winner of the gold medal at last year’s European Championships in Baku. 

"I will keep training hard and get ready for those Games."

Croatia’s Vedran Golec and Spain’s Daniel Ros Gomez shared the bronze medals after beating The Netherlands’ Jeroen Wanrooij and Slovenia’s Ivan Konrad Trajkovic respectively.

Meanwhile in the women’s over 67kg final, France’s Gwladys Epangue overcame Olympic champion Milica Mandic of Serbia with a 9-7 victory.

She dedicated her gold medal to friend Alexis Vastine, the boxer who was one of three French sports personalities killed in a helicopter crash in Argentina last March.

Vastine, a light welterweight bronze medallist at Beijing 2008, died along with London 2012 Olympic swimming champion Camille Muffat and sailor Florence Arthaud, after two helicopters collided.

All were involved in the filming of television survival show, "Dropped", in which celebrities are flown into hazardous terrain by helicopter before being filmed as they attempt to find food and shelter.

In total, eight French nationals and two Argentinian pilots were killed as a result of the accident. 

"I want to dedicate my medal to my family and friends and coach, but also to my special friend who died two months ago," said Epangue. 

“I lost a friend who left us in Argentina."

At 31, the experienced Frenchwoman was the oldest competitor in the over 67kg weight class,

Epangue found herself 3-1 in front after the first round of the final before Mandic fought back with a headkick in the second to move into a 5-3 lead. 

At 6-6 in the third round, and with just seconds to go, Epangue scored three decisive points with a turning back kick and, although Mandic registered a further two points, it did not change the outcome as her opponent won 9-8.

Croatia’s Iva Rados won 12-4 against Spain’s Rosanna Simon Alamo in the first bronze medal match before Russia’s Olga Ivanova triumped 7-3 against Ukraine’s Maryna Konieva to take the second.

Azerbaijan topped taekwondo's final medal standings with three golds, one silver and one bronze, followed by Great Britain with two golds and one bronze.

Russia finished in third with one gold, two silvers and two bronzes.
