MG Motor has become the Official Automotive Partner of British Athletics ©MG MotorJanuary 16 - MG Motor has become the Official Automotive Partner of British Athletics in a deal set to support the sport in the approach to the 2016 Rio Games and the 2017 London IAAF and IPC World Championships.

The deal sees MG Motor replace Alfa Romeo as official car suppliers for British Athletics after the Italian car manufacturer's partnership came to an end on December 31.

"We are thrilled and excited to be able to announce this partnership," said Niels de Vos, chief executive of British Athletics.

"MG is an iconic British brand representing innovation, speed and performance and therefore is the perfect fit for British Athletics in one of the most exciting times for the sport."

Both MG Motor and British Athletics have headquarters in Birmingham, with MG located at the historic Longbridge site.

MG Motor will provide a fleet of MG6 and MG3 vehicles in support of the World Class Performance programme in place at British Athletics.

The deal follows the announcement earlier this month that Sainsbury's has signed a new four-year partnership agreement to extend its relationship with British Athletics and its role as the main partner of the Major Event Series.

An MG statement said 2013 had been a year of record-breaking global sales for the company.
