Murdoch had been hailed as a "fantastic appointment" by Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg when he announced her appointment in September 2011. 

But Murdoch has now decided to quit and will leave Glasgow 2014 in November. 

She had been responsible for overseeing delivery of Commonwelath Games-time areas such as sport, Games Family Relations, venues, the Athletes' Village, and Games services, including transport and security.

She plans to return to Australia and to Murdoch Consulting, a specialist solution based events and project-management business.

"I am very proud to have been part of the development and the delivery of a high-quality Games time experience for athletes, volunteers and spectators during the biggest cultural and sporting event ever to take place in Scotland," said Murdoch.

"Over the past year, working with a great team and in positive collaboration with our Games partners, we have made excellent progress towards delivering on the ambitions of an outstanding athlete centred and sports-focused Commonwealth Games.

"The time is now right for me to return to Australia and to consultancy and I wish David Grevemberg and the Glasgow 2014 team every success as they move on the next stage of the journey."

Her departure is a blow as she had been involved in several major events since 2000, when she was the venue manager for beach volleyball at the Sydney Olympics, including Vancouver 2010, where she the vice-president Games services and accommodation at the Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

She had also worked on the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games respecitvely, working as the deputy director sport and venues at Manchester and as the general manager, venues and overlay in Melbourne.

The recruitment process to replace her is already underway and there are bound to be several candidates who worked on London 2012 who will be interested in the role. 

"Jacqui has made an extremely positive contribution to ensuring that Glasgow 2014 remains on track to delivering a great Games for athletes, volunteers, spectators and for Scotland," said Grevemberg.

"Under her leadership, the Games Time Delivery Team has made excellent progress, and due to her efforts, we are in a great place from which to take the operational delivery of Glasgow 2014 to the next stage.

"I know the whole team at Glasgow 2014 and our Games partners will join me in thanking Jacqui warmly for the hard work and focus invested over the past year and wish her well for the future."
